Philosophy & Background

About

The imagery here is intentionally classical: the ibis as the observer, and the bear-bull engraving as the perpetual contest between contraction and expansion.

Engraving
Vis ferrea, et saevum naturae certamen in uno corpore: dum furor incumbit, et vis resistit.
Sic stupet, et magni spectat concordia lites sacer ibis, tacitus judice rerum. J. F. Sculpsit, 1764 · Ex Marmore Antiquo

The Allegory of the Ibis

This engraving presents the bear and the bull as the opposing forces of market life. Their struggle is ancient, cyclical, and unavoidable.

Above that struggle stands the ibis. In the classical imagination, the ibis is a symbol of wisdom, measurement, and the careful recording of truth. It does not fight the bear or champion the bull. It watches, evaluates, and keeps the standard.
